Antique shops: Future collectables

03-Jan-2008

What is very collectable today will not necessarily be in the antique shops of the future. Fashions change in the antique world as they do in any other. Nevertheless, there are some things that make it more likely that an object will be sought-after in the future:

• They're revolutionary, innovative designs of the time, whether it's a kitchen utensil or a dining chair
• They're commonly disposed of after use (magazines, comics, newspapers: particularly first issues or editions marking major newsworthy events)
• They sum up the spirit of their times (i.e. rock and pop dolls)
• They're only available for a limited amount of time (i.e. Manchester United Football strips)

Books are particularly collectable provided they are in good condition.  The idea is that a book must be in the nearest possible state to how it was first published. It is true to say that the smallest nick to the spine, or tiniest patch of rubbing or fading can affect the price enormously. If the book was issued with a dust-wrapper then that must be present and in as close to mint condition as possible.

The author's popularity as a writer, coupled with the rarity of the book concerned, underpin the level of prices paid for any given title. Usually an author's first appearance in print, be it a first novel, or even some rather dull poetry, is of particular value. If that author then went on to establish a significant reputation, these titles can be the most expensive to buy, depending on condition.

The Harry Potter books are a good example of a future collectable. In fact, they are already collectables, particularly the first edition hardback copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Only around 300 of these were printed and already they are fetching prices in the region of £10,000 to £15,000.

Antique shops of the future - other collectable items

Toys and comics
Nostalgia is a powerful spur when it comes to collecting, and many adults seem to end up going to auction rooms to buy back the toys of their childhood. The original Rupert books and Boys Own magazines are always a favourite among collectors, but what will it be tomorrow? Lord of the Rings merchandise?

Handbags
We are in the golden age of handbags at the moment and because big name designers only make a limited amount of a particular style, there is a good chance that they will become highly coveted in years to come.
